Picking my precious

Over at High in The Sky - Sian's lovely blog, she hosts a monthly feature -Storytelling Sunday every month- where currently the theme is 'picking my precious'.
My precious item is something that has always been there- it sat on my mum's little unit in her bedroom beside her little doll and photo of her beloved poodle,Benson.
So it's very special to me as it was so very special to her.

I grew up around mum smoking, not knowing any different. Now- this is not a morbid post, just explaining the memory for me- when I was 9,my brother was killed, he was 16, and I remember going into my mum and dads bedroom Christmas morning to open my presents in my pillow case, and my dad had bought my mum this musical lighter.I remember her having a tear in her eye as the music played but didnt really get it at the time. it was their fisrt Christmas without him...
My mum and dad religiously sold poppies every year, were very active with the British Legion and I also remember trapsing (?) it was to me then!! around the cold dark country lanes to knock on doors to sell poppies every year as I grew up.
My mum was recognised and given a special award and pin when she had completed 50 years of poppy selling.
She kept these in this little heart shaped box and it warms my heart when I see it and the contents - it gives me lovely thoughts and memories.

So there is one of the many things that are precious to me....there have been many over the past few years that I now have - things that were always there and part of home that now are passed down to be precious to me .

Do pop on over to Sian's blog to find many other lovely varied stories of precious things to others..x

These are wonderful treasures. Very precious indeed. What a special person your mum must have been to collect poppy money for 50 years.

Your link didn't seem to be quite right, so I have taken it out and put it back in again and I hope it's working now,
Thanks Denise

They are such wonderful things, thank you for sharing. I was recently asked to pick something from my Nan's jewellery box and I picked her Women's Section badge from the RBL :) x

Your story of the trinkets in your mother's sweet box really touched me, Denise. Having recently gone through things that were precious to my mom, I can really understand how it is to hold those same items dear to me now. Very poignant post. xo

Thanks for sharing your precious. That is a beautiful lighter. I didn't even know such things existed as I come from a family of non-smokers. I own a lighter (just a cheap one) for lighting our birthday candles :) so I don't find them morbid.
